About GMC

Dating back to the early 1900s, GMC was officially named General Motors Corporation in 1916 and initially made a name for itself manufacturing heavy-duty trucks, buses, ambulances and fire trucks.

In more recent years, under the GMC Truck brand, the company focused more on premium medium and light duty trucks plus utility crossover vehicles. The word “Truck” was dropped in 1996 and all manufactured GMC trucks and SUVs now fall under the simple brand name, GMC.

In 2020, GMC announced it will start producing two new models of the Hummer vehicle (GM bought the brand from AM General in 1999). The new GMC Hummer EV will soon be available in two off-road electric models including a truck (due in 2021) and the SUV model (due in 2022).

Besides GMC, General Motors also owns Buick, Cadillac, and Chevrolet.
