When Not to File An Auto Insurance Claim

“Just picked up our car from there.

Car needed body work and paint. The work done looked amazing… colour match was bang on. The detail girl did a great job on cleaning the car! Thank you and I will definitely recommend this business.”

Life happens. Accidents happen.

Do you know when not to file an auto insurance claim?

Have you ever backed out of your garage and had a mailbox mysteriously jump out at you? Had a mysterious scratch appear on your door?

Life happens. Accidents happen. But some of them don’t involve other cars, and some accidents are smaller and less devastating than others. And some are definitely far too small to bother with the stress and fuss of dealing with ICBC or your insurance company to file a claim!

Here are some tips on when not to file an auto insurance claim.

  • For one thing, filing an auto insurance claim may trigger an increase in your car insurance rates.
  • And for another, when it comes to minor damages, scrapes and scratches, sometimes the deductible – the amount you must pay towards an insurance loss before your insurance policy kicks in – is almost as much, if not more, than the actual cost of the damage. What if you are involved in a minor single-vehicle accident and the cost of repair is less or near your deductible amount. This is a perfect example of when not to file an auto insurance claim.

When to Pay for Repairs Out-of-Pocket

Currently, while you have a legal obligation to report a collision of any description to ICBC, you are not legally required to file an insurance claim with ICBC.

So when is it okay to not file an auto insurance claim?

You may want to not claim ICBC insurance and just pay for auto repairs out of pocket if:

  • You’re involved in a minor single-car accident, in which
  • No one is injured, and
  • No other property is damaged but yours.

*Note – Rules Do Change

Insurance companies and their policies continue to evolve and ICBC rules and regulations continue to change and be updated as well. At Maximum Collision, we will update the claims information on this page as and when new rulings become clear. In the meantime, we can help guide you to the most affordable outcome to get your car fully repaired.
